S. Michael Dean, MD
Shoulder, Knee, Ankle and Foot, and Sports Injuries, General Orthopedics
About Dr. Dean
Dr. S. Michael Dean is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He attended medical school at the University of Texas at Houston where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the Medical Honor Society. He then completed a five-year residency at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. His interest in medicine and his desire to use his hands led him to orthopedic surgery. “I’ve always been active in sports,” Dr. Dean says. “I played football in high school and college and was lucky enough not to have any major injury. I enjoy taking care of people who are active and trying to get them back to full activities. Orthopedic surgery allows me to use my knowledge and hands to help patients get better.”
Shoulder, Knee and Foot Philosophy
Dr. Dean has special interests in shoulder and knee injuries. He feels fortunate to have been trained when both open and arthroscopic surgery was used widely. “Today, many procedures are done arthroscopically that we used to do open. It is important to know both techniques in order to choose what is best for each individual case.” Dr. Dean tries to treat patients nonoperatively when possible and feels that one of the best aspects of his training program was learning both nonoperative and operative treatments for orthopedic problems.
“I enjoy seeing patients of all ages, and see both traumatic injuries and degenerative conditions in my practice.” He feels that proper training and conditioning can lessen injuries and prolong a person’s active life. He is committed to giving the highest quality of care possible to patients. He regularly attends continuing education seminars and helps teach residents at LBJ Hospital as a volunteer instructor in clinic and surgery.
Orthopedic Associations
Dr. Dean is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, Texas Orthopedic Association, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, Houston Orthopedic Society, American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, Harris County Medical Society, and the Texas Society of Sports Medicine. He is on staff at Houston Northwest Medical Center, Texas Outpatient Surgery Hospital, Memorial City Memorial Hospital, and Harris County Hospital District. He has been Chief of Orthopedic Surgery and Chairman of Surgical Specialties at Houston Northwest Medical Center.
Dr. Dean and his wife have three children. He spends most of his spare time with his children’s sports. He enjoys jogging, golf, hunting and fishing, and skiing. “I try to find time to exercise several days a week. It helps keep me sane!”
